2023 AFCON: Congo advances to the semi-finals, after defeating Guinea.
Guinea's 2023 AFCON adventure is over after they were unable to handle a determined Congo in the tournament's quarterfinals.
After the thrilling match that ended in four goals, Congo advanced to the 2023 AFCON semifinals, joining the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
Remember that earlier today, the Nigerian team secured their spot in the semi-finals, where they will take on either Cape Verde or South Africa, by defeating the tenacious Angolan team in the quarterfinals with a single goal.
For their part, Congo needed more than a goal to eliminate Guinea, as the latter had taken the lead through a Mohamed Bayo penalty kick in the 20th minute.
Chancel Mbemba Mangulu scored the equaliser in the 27th minute on an open play, levelling the score for the remaining minutes of play. As a result, there was a 1-1 draw at the half.
It took Congo until beyond the hour to score their second goal in the second half, and this time, it came from the penalty spot. When Yoane Wissa converted it in the 65th minute, he did so flawlessly.
The Guineans persisted in trying to get back into the game and showed no signs of giving up. The Congolese scored their third goal in the 82nd minute through Arthur Masuaku as they attempted to rally for a point back.
